SEMA: Chrysler to decide soon on diesel Liberty

By Richard Truett
Automotive News
November 05, 2002

LAS VEGAS -- The Chrysler group will decide in the next six weeks if it will build a diesel version of the Jeep Liberty sport-utility to sell in the United States, said Bernard Robertson, Chrysler head of advanced engineering.

If Chrysler builds the diesel Liberty, it would be sold in the United States before low-sulfur diesel fuel arrives in late 2006.

At the Chicago auto show last February, Rich Schaum, Chrysler's head of engineering and development, said the automaker was considering building the diesel Liberty for the United States to test acceptance for a diesel that wasn't a heavy-duty pickup.

Robertson, at a Chrysler press event in October, said diesels fared poorly in an internal Chrysler survey of technology that interested customers. Only 6 percent of potential customers said they would consider a clean diesel engine, he said.

Robertson, who was speaking at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show here Monday, said the survey would not influence the Liberty decision.

Chrysler already sells a diesel Liberty in other markets.

Can Celine Dion Help Chrysler Rebound?
By DANNY HAKIM
New York Times

DETROIT -- CELINE DION was able to sell a movie about a sinking ship. But can she sell a Chrysler? And can Chrysler sell her?

The Chrysler Group on Tuesday will announce a broad-based partnership with Celine Dion, the 34-year-old French Canadian chanteuse, and Sony Music Entertainment that will include appearances in advertisements, cross promotions of her music with the cars and even a special Chrysler song she will croon. The terms of the three-year deal were not disclosed, though it will pay Ms. Dion in the tens of millions of dollars.

The partnership finds the two parties at junctures where they could be helped by plenty of promotion.

Chrysler, which has struggled since being acquired by Daimler-Benz in 1998, is pinning its hopes on a crop of automobiles scheduled for next year that are more reflective of its new German parentage. And the unit of DaimlerChrysler is eager to shed the Chrysler brand's rust belt heritage for a classier demeanor.

Ms. Dion, best known for "My Heart Will Go On." from the film "Titanic," is ready to serve. On March 25, she begins an ambitious new phase of her career with the first of 600 performances at a 4,000-seat Roman Coliseum-style theater built for her at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. And the publicity boost from the Chrysler partnership can only help sell tickets to the elaborate production, which will be directed by Franco Dragone, a director of Cirque du Soleil shows.

"I did some commercials for Chrysler 14 years ago, I was a spokesperson for Chrysler in Canada in French and in English," said Ms. Dion in an interview. "When they came back to me this time, it felt very natural."

So natural, she added, that she might even give her chauffeurs a break.

"Soon I'll be driving a Town and Country minivan, which is going to be a family thing," she said. "I'm ready to pick my own tomatoes with my son and my husband. That's my goal. Forget the limousines. "

The project is being developed with BBDO Detroit and the Arnell Group, both divisions of the Omnicom Group. Chrysler executives would not specify how much they would spend on the campaign. But in 2001, Chrysler brands were supported by $474.4 million in advertising, according to an Advertising Age analysis of data from CMR, a unit of Taylor Nelson Sofres.

George Murphy, senior vice president of global brand marketing at Chrysler, said "we'll integrate everything about our brand into hers, and she'll integrate her brand into ours."

"Can you imagine putting her with her baby René in the back of one of our minivans and having her sing one of her love ballads?" he added. "We'd have all of America crying. Seriously."

Chrysler extends October incentives, adds Ram rebate
November 5, 2002
BY JEFF GREEN
BLOOMBERG

DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler extended October incentives to this month, adding a $1,000 rebate on heavy-duty Ram pickups and dropping five-year, interest-free loans on minivans as the automaker tries to keep pace with rivals.

The offers include 2.9 percent loans for most models, five-year, no-interest loans on two models and cash rebates of as much as $2,500, said Dave Elshoff, a spokesman for the third-largest U.S. automaker. The heavy-duty Ram pickups, which went on sale in September, didn't have incentives last month, he said.

"There is no reason for them to spice things up since you already have a decent year under way," said CNW Marketing President Art Spinella, who tracks incentive levels.

Chrysler wants to keep its inducements several hundred dollars less than General Motors Corp.'s and offer a better warranty than rivals' as it tries to return to profitability after a 2001 loss of $1.9 billion. U.S. October auto sales fell 6 percent from September to an annualized rate of 15.5 million as incentives drew fewer customers.

"I'd love to be able to bring incentives down," James Schroer, Chrysler executive vice president of sales and marketing, said in an interview. "We will keep our dealers competitive no matter what" General Motors does.

General Motors, the largest automaker, on Friday stopped offering the longest no-interest loans and will give buyers more cash back on most 2003 models. Ford Motor Co. started offering six-year loans to cut monthly payments. In October, Ford led with average incentives of $3,816 per model, compared with $3,729 for General Motors and $3,547 for Chrysler, Spinella said.

Stuttgart, Germany-based DaimlerChrysler's U.S. shares rose 94 cents to $35.66 at 4:16 pm. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. They have fallen 14 percent this year.

DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler seeks 8 percent annual productivity gains
November 5, 2002
BY JEFF GREEN
BLOOMBERG

DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler will cut the time it takes to build cars and trucks as much as 8 percent this year and needs to match that the "next couple" years as it tries to end losses, an executive said.

The third-largest U.S. automaker boosted productivity 7 percent in this year's first three quarters, said Tom LaSorda, executive vice president of manufacturing. Chrysler is eliminating production bottlenecks, reducing overtime and making other changes to build vehicles faster, he said.

"The days are over that we have deterioration in productivity," he said in an interview in Windsor, Ontario, before a Chamber of Commerce meeting.

Chrysler wants to improve from last place among major automakers in the Harbour & Associates report of manufacturing efficiency as it tries to make a profit after losing $1.9 billion last year. The U.S.-based unit during 2001 averaged 30.82 hours to build each car or truck, and top-ranked Nissan Motor Co. needed only 17.92 hours, according to the industry benchmark report.

Chrysler improved the time it takes to build a car or truck by only 8.7 percent in the previous five years combined, LaSorda said. The automaker's improvement may push it past U.S. rivals as early as next year and bring it to the level of Asian rivals by the end of the decade, he said.

The U.S. shares of Stuttgart, Germany-based DaimlerChrysler rose 95 cents to $35.67 at 3:49 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. They have fallen 14 percent this year.

DaimlerChrysler to build Smart cars in Brazil
FRANKFURT, Nov 4
Reuters

Carmaking giant DaimlerChrysler said on Monday it planned to build a four-seat version of its small Smart car in Brazil, paving the way for a possible launch of the brand in the United States.

The firm said the new model would be built at its Juiz de Fora plant, which currently produces Mercedes A-Class cars for the Brazilian market and C-class saloons for North America. It would be the first Smart plant outside Europe.

"This variant underscores the great potential of the Smart brand," DaimlerChrysler board member Juergen Hubbert said in a statement. "At the same time, it marks a major step towards Smart's entry into the U.S. market in coming years."

The new four-seater would be based on a compact car currently being developed with Japanese partner Mitsubishi Motors Corp. <7211.T>, which DaimlerChrysler plans to build at its NedCar plant in Born, the Netherlands.

A company spokesman said it was too early to say whether the Brazil plan would create new jobs and noted it would finalize an agreement with Brazilian authorities in the coming weeks.

The spokesman could also not comment on the project's cost, but, later in Sao Paulo, a spokesman for Brazil's President- elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the head of DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz unit had telephoned Lula to tell him the company planned to invest $500 million to develop a new car in the Latin American country.

A spokeswoman for Mercedes in Brazil said the company could not comment on whether Lula's spokesman was referring to the DaimlerChrysler investment.

Last year, Smart sold about 116,000 of its two-seaters, currently the only car it produces. Analysts estimate the car generates annual revenue of about $1 billion.

Due to start-up investment costs, the division does not expect to break even until 2004.

The two-seat Smart, which is about as long as most cars are wide, has gained in popularity among European city dwellers since its debut in 1998, but regulatory hurdles have prevented it from entering the world's largest car market, the United States.

Some industry analysts are in any case sceptical about the chances for a brand specializing in small, fuel-efficient cars in America, where petrol prices are low and roads are wide.

Chrysler minivans named most fuel-efficient

Two of Chrysler's minivan models built at its Fenton, Mo., assembly plants have been named the most fuel-efficient minivans for the 2003 model year.

An annual fuel study by the U.S. Department of Energy showed the Chrysler Voyager/Town & Country and the Dodge Caravan tied for most efficient minivans. Both vehicles get 21 miles per gallon in city-driving conditions, and 27 mpg in highway-driving conditions.

The Chevrolet Express and Savana passenger vans, both manufactured at GM's plant in Wentzville, Mo., were rated the least efficient passenger vans in the study, with just 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.

The Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer models, built at Ford's plant in Hazelwood, weren't ranked among the most or least efficient vehicles, but received an EPA air pollution score of 4 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Although American-made trucks and vans had better gas mileage than the foreign models, foreign-made cars and SUVs had the best gas mileage, the survey showed.

The Honda Insight received the study's most efficient overall rating with 61 mpg in the city and 68 mpg on the highway. Among other passenger cars named as most fuel-efficient were the BMW Mini Cooper, Volkswagen New Beetle (Diesel), Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Accord, Chevrolet Impala, VW Jetta Wagon (Diesel) and the Ford Focus Station Wagon.

Among the least fuel-efficient were Ferrari, Aston Martin and Bentley models.

DCX Shifts Plants Into Idle
Four North American Chrysler plants to be idled
October 28, 2002
ASSOCIATED PRESS

DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler division plans to idle four North American plants for a week starting today.

The move will affect about 13,300 workers in Canada and Missouri, Chrysler spokeswoman Michele Tinson said Friday.

The plants are Brampton, Pillette and Windsor in Ontario and St. Louis-South in Missouri. Brampton and Pillette also were idled this week. The four make Dodge and Chrysler passenger cars, minivans and full-size vans and wagons.

Tinson said six Chrysler plants also will be running on overtime next week.

"We build to market demand," she said.

Tinson said the automaker doesn't forecast future production schedules and therefore does not predict future idling plans.

"We're confident that this is just a snapshot in time and hopeful that it will not last," she said.

Truck Slow Down Prompts Layoffs
DaimlerChrysler's Freightliner will fire 675 workers
October 30, 2002
BY JEFF GREEN
BLOOMBERG NEWS
PORTLAND, Ore.

DaimlerChrysler AG's Freightliner unit, the world's biggest heavy-truck maker, will fire about 675 workers and shut two plants for eight days as demand slows because of new U.S. truck-engine pollution rules.

The unit will temporarily close two North Carolina plants, in Cleveland and Mount Holly, in January, laying off 3,280 workers. The company will also fire 675 temporary and permanent workers at Cleveland and a St. Thomas, Ontario, truck plant in the first quarter of 2003, spokesman Chris Brandt said. More temporary shutdowns are expected in February and March, the company said.

Truck orders are falling in the U.S. because transportation companies have already stocked up on vehicles with engines that met the previous pollution rules, citing concerns about the new engines' cost and reliability.

Freightliner said it still expects to report a "slight operating profit" this year after exceeding cost-cut targets of $450 million by $100 million. The company fired 2,700 workers in 2001 as part of a plan to return to profitability this year. It has reduced its workforce by more than half since 1999.

Caterpillar Inc., the world's second-biggest maker of heavy-duty diesel engines, DaimlerChrysler's Detroit Diesel engine unit, along with Paccar Inc. and Navistar International Corp., the world's third and fourth largest truckmakers, also have announced layoffs because of the slowdown.

Freightliner, which employs 13,000 people in North America, said in a statement it may also reduce workers at a Santiago, Mexico plant and a parts plant in Gastonia, North Carolina.

DaimlerChrysler to probe Argentine disappearences

Reuters

German automaker DaimlerChrysler AG <DCXGn.DE> said on Monday it had set up an independent inquiry into the unexplained disappearance of 14 workers' council representatives in Argentina in the 1970s.

The move follows pressure from activist shareholders who have drawn attention to the suspected murder and torture of Daimler-Benz labour council members under the military dictatorship in Argentina in 1975-1978.

DaimlerChrysler's board has appointed an investigating commission headed by Berlin legal expert Christian Tomuschat to establish what happened to the 14 workers' representatives, the head of its current workers' council said on Monday.

"You cannot let such an accusation stand," workers' council chief Erich Klemm said in Stuttgart. The investigation is due to to end in September next year.

The Association of Critical Shareholders has alleged that a German manager at the Mercedes plant in Gonzalez Catan gave the Argentine military the address of at least one workers' council member in 1977 who later disappeared amid widespread killings of leftwingers.

In April, DaimlerChrysler said it would invite human rights group Amnesty International to investigate allegations about its links to the disappearances.

Daimler-Benz merged with Chrysler in 1998 to become DaimlerChrysler AG.

Suspect drives into jail after 20mph police car chase
Tuesday 29th October 2002

A suspected drink-driver drove into jail after realising he couldn't escape from a police chase.

The 22-year-old led police on a chase which often moved as slowly as 20mph. It ended when he turned into the Brown County Jail's parking lot in Green Bay, Wisconsin, US.

Police say the man parked his pickup in the jail's lot, smoked a cigarette, got out of the truck and lay face-down on the ground to be arrested.

He allegedly told the officers he knew he was drunk and was going to be sent to jail, so he just drove there. The man also was arrested for cocaine possession and an outstanding warrant for a hit-and-run accident.

The chase began around 1 am when an officer spotted the truck ignoring signs and going the wrong way on a one-way street. The officer chased the pickup. A 21-year-old woman passenger tried to get out of the vehicle several times and eventually bailed out near a junction. She was not injured.

Beam Me Off, Scotty!
Stop—in the name of the law! Engine-deadening devices nearing use in vehicles
By ALEX LAW
Oct. 29, 2002

In the United Kingdom, there’s a service that phones you if your car is stolen, tracks it using a global positioning satellite system beacon and turns the engine off when The Old Bill (read: cops) are ready to nick the villains.

In the United States, Delphi Automotive is pushing a technology that uses GPS to follow trucks and turn them off if they stray from their approved path, all in the name of trying to keep transport-trailers from becoming portable bombs. Services in Canada and the U.S. track and deactivate rental cars if they’re stolen.

But with the D.C.-Virginia-Maryland sniper still fresh in the headlines, talk around the water coolers at Convergence, a recent car electronics and telematics show in Detroit, centered on how easy it would be to build a device using electromagnetic waves to interfere with and short-circuit the electrical systems in every vehicle within a certain geographic area and keep them from running while the police investigated area crimes.

A more sophisticated version of the same sort of engine-deadening device could also be targeted and used to shut down cars leading police on chases (although there would no doubt be a sustained outcry from the Los Angeles helicopter news media and various real-life cop shows).

In those kinds of specific criminal situations, and with matters of homeland security still pressing for the nation in general, it’s easy to see how engine- cutting technology might take on a more acceptable political tone.

Word from the people who specialize in the integration of electronics into automobiles is that this is clearly something they could do right away, so the idea of whether authorities should be able to disable vehicles has already moved from being a practical question to a political issue.

So, i'm back up today. And hopefully tomorrow. Thanks! I think its time for a new contest here on Scatpack.com? Do you agree?

Anyone else glad the sniper wasn't driving a dodge?

Woman misses marriage proposal after taking different route to work
W A R N I N G:
BRITISH TERMS ABOUND!

A Malaysian woman missed a giant banner carrying a marriage proposal from her boyfriend because she didn't take her usual route to work.

Lim Sen King chose a novel way to propose marriage to his girlfriend Kang C-Sze.

The Malaysian, who is currently living in Australia where he works, made the offer on a huge banner hung outside the PJ Hilton hotel in Petaling Jaya.

According to the The Straits Times Miss Kang, who would normally pass the hotel on her way to work, chose a different route.

Later that day, she began to get phone calls from her friends asking her if she had seen the banner outside the PJ Hilton Hotel.

When she finally saw it, Miss Kang said she was shocked to discover that the banner carried a message from her boyfriend asking her to marry him.

She said Mr Lim had discussed the possibility of marriage with her some time ago and that she said she had wanted a proper proposal. However, she never expected something as big as this.

She added: "'It is even more special as today is also my birthday and this is definitely a birthday present I will never forget."

Miss Kang phoned Mr Lim from the hotel to accept his proposal. The PJ Hilton will also be hosting the couple's wedding reception, scheduled for next year.

DChrysler Highlights Its New Body
God, i love concept vehicles!
Chrysler showboats design talent

DaimlerChrysler is showing off a trio of concept vehicles to put a spotlight on new technology during Convergence 2002 in Detroit this week.

Two of the vehicles, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Concierge and the 300M-IT edition, look like they came right out of a Chrysler-Jeep showroom but are equipped with new uses of technology that sets them apart from other vehicle on the road.

"Experience has shown us that our customers can't really evaluate a new technology until they experience it personally," said Bernard Robertson, senior vice president-engineering technology and regulatory affairs at the Chrysler Group. "That's why we build concept vehicles, such as the Concierge and the 300M-IT edition - so people can experience these new technologies first-hand."

The Grand Cherokee Concierge, for example, comes with several different technologies designed and engineered to increase "customer comfort, convenience and security," representatives from the Chrysler Group said.

The technology includes a voice-controlled key fob; a rearview mirror that doubles as a video screen when the vehicle is backing up and a center-high-mounted stoplight that can double as a message center to alert drivers to the rear if they creep too close

Among the other features are a lane departure system that goes off if the vehicle comes too close to the other lane without using the turn indicator, and radar to help guide the vehicle into a parking spot. There's also a radar that trips a warning if there is another vehicle in the driver's blind spots. It also comes with a heart defibrillator that will automatically call for medical assistance once it is removed from the vehicle.

The Concierge also comes with a capless fuel-filler valve that locks tight automatically and eliminates the need for a screw-in filler cap.

The 300M-IT edition, which was designed with help from the Media Labs at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) comes with multiple cameras to track the drivers eye, and will trip an alarm if the driver starts to fall asleep or is impaired. There are also ultrasonic sensors to indicate whether seats are occupied as well as a carbon monoxide sensor.

"We are looking for good ideas and interesting new technologies where we might find them," said Thomas Moore, vice president and head of DaimlerChrysler's advanced technology group in Rochester Hills.

"The DaimlerChrysler vehicles demonstrate the kinds of new technologies that are only made possible by computers," Robertson added. "Computing power continues to expand rapidly."

DaimlerChrysler also is showing off the futuristic-looking F400, which was developed by the Mercedes-Benz Group to demonstrate new stability controls that are just beginning to emerge from the lab.

The F400 is equipped with active camber control that changes the angle of the wheel in a turn and electronic controls that replace the standard mechanical control systems for steering and braking that have been found on cars for decades.

When the brake pedal is depressed, a computer electronically adjusts brake pressure for each wheel.

Landowner runs over sheep because they were trespassing

A Romanian mill owner ran over 102 sheep with his new Jeep because the animals were trespassing on his land.

It took him just over an hour to kill the animals and leave their bodies on his field.

Nicolae Man said he got mad when he saw the sheep on his newly ploughed field and started to chase them.

Shepherd Ilie Ghise said his livestock were worth £40 each and he had never intended to let them on Mr Man's property.

He told the Evenimentul Zilei newspaper: "He said he killed my sheep by mistake. Now, we'll see how we can handle this. It is his problem to pay."

It is believed the two men later came to an agreement over compensation. Police said the shepherd had not made a complaint.

DChrysler To Hawk Its America Roots
Automaker hopes to recoup market share

BERLIN

The Chrysler Group hopes to finally find the on ramp to the autobahn with a new ad campaign aimed at boosting its minuscule sales in Germany, Europe's largest car market.

The campaign, unveiled Tuesday by company executives, uses classic Chryslers such as the curvy 1934 Airflow to try to win over Germans who might know that Chrysler merged with their familiar Daimler-Benz in 1998 -- but otherwise have only foggy notions of the U.S. half of the deal.

Chrysler, still embroiled in a turnaround effort that brought it back into profitability in the first quarter of this year after six quarters of losses, has a long way to go in the land of Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen.

It sold 17,251 Chrysler-badged cars in Germany last year, far behind U.S. rivals Ford and General Motors, which have had strong European images and subsidiaries for years. German authorities registered 296,550 Fords and 394,586 cars from Opel, GM's subsidiary, last year.

That gives Chrysler just 0.69 percent of the market. It hopes to raise that to 1 percent by 2006 -- hardly enough to worry rivals, but close to a 50 percent increase in sales for the company.

Unveiled at Berlin's Tempelhof airport, the ads draw on the more stylish cars in Chrysler's history and the glamour of American cultural icons, such as actor Humphrey Bogart, who either drove a Chrysler or were in a movie with one.

"Route 66 meets the German autobahn," said Hartwig Hirtz, the executive responsible for Chrysler and Jeep at DaimlerChrysler's sales and marketing office in Berlin.

"Right now the Chrysler brand is not well known in Germany," Hirtz said. "If you ask a BMW driver what he's driving, he says a BMW, not a BMW 7-series. But if you ask someone driving a Voyager what they're driving, they say, 'A Voyager.' " They say, 'Oh, it's a Chrysler?' "

The campaign, which starts Monday in major German magazines and newspapers, is the latest effort to wring synergies out of the sometimes-rocky 1998 merger with Daimler-Benz. One of the reasons that pushed Chrysler, based in Auburn Hills, toward a deal with its foreign partner was its own lack of sales outside North America.

PT Turbo - Too Little Too Late?
Turbo power in PT Cruiser isn't enough
GT version has welcome pep but steering, shifting are ponderous
BY LAWRENCE ULRICH
FREE PRESS AUTO CRITIC

More than anything, the PT Cruiser is about style.

So let's get that out of the way: If the Cruiser's Bonnie-and-Clyde style makes your heart go rat-a-tat, you'll likely love the GT even more.

Those not dizzied by this Boomer bombshell may consider strictly the performance, measured against other cars near its tested $24,510 price. By that yardstick, the turbocharged GT comes up short, despite its impressive straight-line punch.

It's about time Chrysler put some "go" in the Cruiser's show. While the practicality of this Neon-bred hauler was a bonus, its hot-rod exterior promised speed that its four-cylinder engine couldn't deliver.

Now, the Cruiser's street worthiness gets a boost with a turbocharger that adds 65

horsepower to the 2.4-liter four-cylinder, for a total of 215. A hefty 245 pound-feet of torque (up from 162) cures the PT's terminal case of the cutes.

Chrysler engineers went through the 2.4-liter engine piece by piece, improving internal cooling with revised water jackets and oil-cooled, lower-compression pistons. New valves and a hardened crankshaft help the engine withstand additional stresses from the turbo power. The turbocharger is integrated into the exhaust manifold, which helps it build boost quickly and lowers emissions.

No longer will PT owners have to avert their eyes and fiddle with the radio when challenged at stoplights. Equipped with four-speed automatic, the Cruiser GT scoots from 0-60 m.p.h. in a very respectable 7.2 seconds. The base PT peters out at 105 m.p.h., but the GT hits 120 before the electronic limiter calls a halt.

Turbo lag is minimal, meaning there's right-now acceleration whenever you press the gas.

The newfound juice is especially welcome in passing, where the standard PT struggled. It's much zippier in traffic.

But despite its wind-whipping ability, the PT won't be on my short list of cheap thrills. Once again, the mysteries of performance revolve around balance, sound and feel as much as brute power...

New Canada Plant - A Lesson in Sharing
Chrysler factory will be a hybrid
Suppliers would own part of Windsor plant
October 22, 2002
BY JOHN GALLAGHER
DETROIT FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER

A new Chrysler Group plant to open in Windsor in 2005 will need innovative relationships with suppliers to become reality, Chrysler Group President and Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche said Monday.

Zetsche told reporters that he expects suppliers to not only operate sections of the assembly plant but perhaps even own parts of the new factory, such as the body shop or the paint shop.

Automakers in Europe and South America have developed hybrid operations in which suppliers play a much greater role than in traditional U.S. assembly plants.

Zetsche made clear that such innovative partnerships with suppliers will be necessary to make the complex economics of the new plant work for Chrysler.

"The better we can work together, the more likely that we can accomplish a feasible project," Zetsche said.

Zetsche spoke the day after members of the Canadian Auto Workers union overwhelmingly ratified a new 3-year labor agreement with DaimlerChrysler Canada.

As part of its deal with the CAW, Chrysler agreed to build a new auto plant for an unspecified product in Windsor to open in late 2005. The deal was contingent on Chrysler winning government aid for the project as well as support from suppliers.

While the product for the plant has not been specified, and in theory could come from any of DaimlerChrysler AG's divisions, including Mercedes-Benz, Zetsche said Monday the vehicle most likely will be a Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep product.

Zetsche said the majority of workers at the complex will be employed by supplier firms, not Chrysler. The company estimated Monday it will employ about 1,000 workers at the plant, while suppliers will employ about 1,500 more.

DC sees quarterly profit
But automaker warns of a weak 4th quarter

DaimlerChrysler AG easily topped investors' official expectations for third-quarter profits, but a warning that future earnings won't be as robust hurt the automaker's stock Wednesday.

DaimlerChrysler posted a solid net profit for July through September, but its chief financial officer warned that profits are likely to shrivel up in the final three months of the year.

Shares of DaimlerChrysler fell 81 cents, or 2.1 percent, to close at $37.05 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange, on a day when the Dow Jones industrial average gained 44 points. Auto stocks were split for the day, with General Motors Corp. up 2 percent and Ford Motor Co. down 2.5 percent.

The world's fifth-largest automaker reported a net income of $771 million, down 22 percent from the $991 million earned from July through September of 2001.

Last year's performance was slowed by economic fallout from the terrorist attacks on the United States, but DaimlerChrysler also reported a large onetime gain related to its aircraft business last year.

It was a better quarter than Detroit automakers GM and Ford could claim. Write-downs for bad investments turned strong third-quarter operating profits into net losses at Ford and GM.

Random Deaths Plague Mexican Plant

Cleaning workers die at Mexican DaimlerChrysler plant
MEXICO CITY,
Oct 24
Reuters

Four people doing cleaning work at a Mexico City plant of German auto maker DaimlerChryler AG died of asphyxiation from breathing toxic fumes on Thursday, officials and a spokesman from the company said.

The few employees who were on the premises of the plant, which was not producing cars at the time and was scheduled to be shut down permanently, were evacuated and an inquiry was launched into the accident, authorities said.

"Four workers died. An investigation is under way," DaimlerChrysler spokesman in Mexico Manuel Duarte told Reuters.

The victims, who were from the cleaning firm Henkel Mexicana and between 25 and 30 years old, inhaled fumes that were produced as they were washing a cistern, a spokesman for the capital's public security ministry said.

The Mexican unit of DaimlerChrysler <DCX.N> <DCXGn.DE> said it would wait for the results of the investigation to give more details of the safety measures in place at the plant, which is located in the west of the city.

DaimlerChrysler is the biggest exporter of cars built in Mexico, and it also has truck and bus assembly plants in Mexico. But last year said it would shut down three of its plants here -- the Mexico City assembly plant, plus two plants that built motors and transmissions -- due to the economic recession in the United States.

Chrysler loses appeal of $3.2 million accident award

CINCINNATI

DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Corp. unit lost its appeal of a $3.24 million jury award to the widow of a Kentucky man who was killed after being thrown from his 1992 Dodge Ram pickup.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said that a lower court properly allowed jurors to hear testimony from accident reconstruction expert Andrew Gilberg, who suggested that the fatality may have been due to a faulty door latch.

Charles Clark was killed in October 1993, after his truck was struck by a Kentucky State Police cruiser. Clark and his passengers weren't wearing seatbelts. Clark was the only one thrown from the vehicle, the court said.

"Mr. Gilberg's opinion that the Dodge Ram K latch system was defective and that it was unreasonably dangerous was based on his technical knowledge with respect to automobile door latch systems," the appellate court found.

Ann Smith, a spokeswoman for Detroit-based Chrysler, said the company is reviewing the decision, and hasn't made a decision whether to appeal.

Smith said that the police car hit the driver's side of Clark's truck at 50 miles per hour, and Chrysler's experts contended that the fatal injuries occurred on impact.

U.S. District Judge Solomon Oliver Jr., who was sitting on the Cincinnati-based appeals court for the case, wrote the opinion. Circuit Judge Gilbert S. Merritt joined the opinion and Circuit Judge David A. Nelson dissented in part.

Nelson said he wouldn't have upheld the $3 million in punitive damages against Chrysler "for its supposed recklessness in failing to equip the truck with a door latch that would have spared Mr. Clark the inconvenience of buckling his seatbelt."

The case had been tried in London, Kentucky, before U.S. District Judge Jennifer B. Coffman
